Our Farm Story
Hello and Welcome to Studnicka Cattle Co.!
Our family has been farming in the beautiful Driftless area region of southwestern Wisconsin in rural Muscoda since the 1870s.
Much of my family’s legacy has been built on being pioneers in the industry and caretakers of the land, paving the way for future generations to come. That very premise is why we are here and continuing on our next chapter. Family and Farming!
Hi, I am Ryan Studnicka. I am the fifth-generation farmer of the Studnicka family. While growing up, my family was a dairy farm that also raised beef cattle, hogs, chickens, and quarter horses. I attended Riverdale School and completed my degree at UW-Platteville focusing on Commodity and Price Analysis. Throughout college I would find myself coming home most weekends to help my father with his registered Angus beef herd and crop farming. After college I worked around the state establishing my career in agriculture while always longing to have my own beef herd.
In 2014 that dream became a reality when I purchased a Black Angus Baldy beef herd (white face and mostly black body) . At that time I was still living and working in Madison. This satisfied me momentarily, while in the back of my mind I knew I wanted to be close to mine and my dad’s respective herds and operation daily. Opportunity knocked in 2015 when I accepted a position at the local family cheese plant in Muscoda, bringing me home for good! After living in town for a few years and searching relentlessly for my very own farm, a once in a lifetime opportunity came up in 2017. The farm next to my dad’s farm was going to auction. After much planning, preparing, and utter finger crossing I was fortunate enough to secure the farm at the start of 2018.
Since purchasing the farm we have implemented rotational grazing and cover cropping along with many improvements to the land, buildings, and homestead.
Historically, we have always been a cow-calf operation. However, we started to see the inevitable need for long-term sustainability which pointed towards working directly with the beef consumer. What started as a social media page for family and friends sharing what we were up to, it has led to today’s full beef product lineup working with countless customers, multiple chefs, along with several wholesale and retail accounts.
In 2021 Ryan met his now wife, Taylor. She was born and raised on a dairy farm near La Farge, WI. Growing up they also had a brood mare program, raising and selling foals. She always knew she wanted to be a part of the farming industry in some way. After high school at La Farge, she obtained her Agriculture and Dairy Herd Management degree at Southwest WI Technical College. Immediately after completion she moved to Hillsboro, WI and started her milking job on a dairy farm. After she was there for one year, the farm upgraded to a robotic milking system. During the expansion she was promoted to the herd manager, which she held for six years before she transferred to our farm full time in the fall of 2021 as the farm manager. She brought an extensive experience of animal caretaking and animal husbandry, which immediately helped improve our herd and overall farm management.
While we were dating we went on many horse trail rides and shared many fond childhood memories of raising and having horses. At the time we had a couple older geldings. We routinely talked about the future for us and our children. One of the things we passionately kept coming back to was raising and having horses of our own someday. With this in mind we began our search for our first broodmare at the start of 2022. We ended up down in Texas, where we secured our first mare in March 2022, Sparkle. We put some groundwork on her before sending her to a trainer to be broke to ride. After getting her home, we continued to ride her and eventually got her bred to a stallion. She quickly left a mark on us and soon became our heart horse. Our passion for horses only intensified as we followed the industry closer. We saw an opportunity to diversify our farm with adding additional broodmares from across the country. We decided to focus on cowhorse mares that were daughters of industry leading money earning stallion sires. We had our first foal in the spring of 2023.
In May of 2023 we got married and had a small, intimate wedding on our farm along with our daughters and family.
Our family has always prided ourselves on doing what’s best for family, the animals, and the land. My only hope is to continue this strong family tradition. Our products are a direct reflection of this passion. Thank you for your support and for playing a part in our farm story.
We look forward to working with YOU!
